Literature Text

Having been subjected to starvation before, I can quickly identify when someone else is suffering from it as well. So, given that fact, it was more than obvious to me that Haley was either starving herself or being starved.

Her eyes were sunken in and had bags under them as though she hadn't slept for several days, possibly weeks; I could see her shoulder bones sticking out through the thin, silken shirt she was wearing. She looked like a walking skeleton; I'd seen walking skeletons before and that's exactly what she looked like when I saw her sitting there in the coffee shop.

"Hi, Haley?" I asked, trying to confirm that it was really her.

"Oh, hi," she said, extending a hand for me to shake. "You must be Caleb."

I took her hand and I swear I felt every single bone; after releasing her hand, I sat down across from her. "So, Haley…you wanted to meet me?"

"Yeah," she said, smiling for a moment before she hardened her gaze. "I want you and your friends to back off."

"Er, what?" I asked, trying to make it seem like I had no idea what she was talking about.

"You heard me, mutt," she snarled, her amber eyes becoming more canine in appearance. "Back off. You and your little pack back off. Leave town, now, before the full moon."

I know that this was a bad idea, but instead of leaning back in my seat to put distance between her and myself, I leaned forward; I felt a low growl building in my throat when I said, "And if we don't? What are you going to do?"

She narrowed her eyes and curled her lip; her canine teeth were a bit sharper than they should have been. "If you don't leave, we will hunt you down and slaughter you."

I looked at her half-starved form and gave her a very cocky smirk; I personally blame my reaction to her threat on my canine nature. "Really? Hunt us down and slaughter us? Well in that case…bring it on."

She narrowed her eyes at me and stood up abruptly from the table, swaying slightly since her thin frame was not built for sudden bursts of energy like that; after exchanging glares, she left the coffee shop and I continued to sit there, trying to figure out how exactly we had gone from meeting to discuss her starvation to her threatening me and me challenging her…
It's been forever since I wrote something to the 100 Themes Challenge, but I haven't given up on completing the list! I've just been working on my NaNoWriMo novel, but with the end of November, comes the chance to try and finish the list of themes.

So, not much to say about this theme. Though the main theme is 'starvation', it is barely mentioned. It's narrated by Caleb and takes place after the other themes I've written to so far with the exception of "Solitude".

Caleb and company are investigating werewolf attacks and then he meets Haley. Worried about her when he notices how unhealthy she looks, he starts talking to her and they soon become friends, but then the full moon gets closer...
